The Results of the Fifth European Newspaper Award

The Oscar of the Newspaper Branch Presented for the Fifth time


The European Newspaper Award is a European competition for newspaper design and newspaper concept, which was announced in 1999 for the first time. It is organized by the newspaper designer Norbert Küpper from Meerbusch (Germany) in co-operation with the two journalistic magazines Medium Magazin and Österreichischer Journalist.

The competition facilitates the exchange of information on newspaper design and conception throughout Europe and has been very successful so far as a great number of newspapers usually participate in it: The Fifth European Newspaper Award counted as many as 331 newspapers from 22 countries, The fourth competition counted 206 newspapers and the third competition was accepted by 185 papers.

The competition is also known as’ Oscar of the Newspaper Branch’. The presentation of the awards will take place in Vienna (Austria) on March 29 and 30, 2004.

This year - as in the past years - the jury has decided to present four chief awards according to the four different categories: local papers, regional papers, national papers and weeklies.
The chief prizewinners are allowed to sport the title „Europe’s Best Designed Newspaper“ in their masthead for one year.

The chief prizewinners of the Fifth European Newspaper Award are:

Category local newspaper: Goienkaria, Spain

Europes Best Designed Newspaper
Category regional newspaper: Heraldo de Aragon, Spain

Europes Best Designed Newspaper
Category national newspaper: Corriere della Sera, Italy

Europes Best Designed Newspaper
Category weekly newspaper: Sunday Tribune, Ireland

Judges' Special Recognition:
La Voz de Galicia, Spain


Apart from the chief awards, 87 newspapers from 18 countries were given Awards of Excellence according to different categories such as front pages, inside pages, info graphics, typography, photography, photo reportages, supplements and special pages. Among the awarded newspapers are 27 from Germany.

Several newspapers were given awards in different categories:
6 Awards: Morgenavisen Jyllands Posten, Denmark; El Periodico de Catalunya, Spain
5 Awards: Helsingborgs Dagblad, Sweden
4, Die Zeit, Germany, El Correo, Spain; Norrköpings Tidningar, Sweden
