Eleftheros Tipos.
Europe's best newspaper in the categoy 'national newspaper'. They give a truly virtuoso performance in newspaper making.
Jury-Statement:
"Eleftheros Tipos" caught the jury's idea in almost all categories. Front pages: They are often devoted to a single topic and display enormous typographic care. Inside pages: Cover stories are allowed to run over several pages. They are then structured by  pictures, quotation blocks, and service boxes and offer the readers new stimuli. Infographics and illustrations are standard elements  with this nationwide newspaper.
Their use of typography and white space creates a special aesthetic appeal, which accounts for the paper's modern, but serious character.
Masthead. It is printed in capital letters, the second part of the title being bolder and, thus, emphasizing it. "Eleftheros Tipos" means "Free Press".

Date. It is placed on the left below the masthead and marked by a big red dot. This dot also appears on other pages and on their homepage www.e-tips.com.

Front Page Story. The page shows a combination of  a lead article  and  a photo, both dealing with a dangerous virus. The three-deck, but otherwise inconspicuous headline signalizes that the situation is not really that dramatic. In that case the headline would have covered the whole width of the page.

Teasers above the Masthead. There are four teasers altogether plus a reference to a supplement by the name of Agenda.

Typography. For headlines they use the Britannic Greek, which is an unusual choice. In the German speaking area, for instance, this font is completely out of fashion. The Greek version, however, appears quite modern. For bodycopy  the Fedra Sans is used, a sanserif font with a straight design. A similar font can be found on their hompage.

Front Page 2. In Greece, newspapers are not available by subscription. This is why front pages display a great variety. This front page, for example, is made of statistics. The headline is put in a block in the centre and reads: "Do we have Europe's worst health care system?"

Front Page 3. The lead article deals with the topic "Fewer holidays for the Greek". The area with the six teasers is put under the masthead.

News Page. This news page deals with the situation in the Near East,  with the headline inserted in the photo. The lighted part in the picture leads the reader to its central motif. The text is supplemented by infographics and a service box.

Information through Different Channels. The double page features real estate prices in Manhattan and Athens. The two main articles are placed on the left, together with an additional piece of information and a photo, whereas the right page contains a large infographic item and three quotations. The major part of the infographics is covered by  a map of Manhattan. This way of distributing information and presenting it through different channels was able to convince the jury, the more so as this is part of the staff's regular job.

Sectional Front Page. Each section is introduced by a large section title. The topic dealt with on this page is the pollution of rivers in many regions of the earth. The lead picture shows the situation  at the Rio Grande, the small photos on the right inform about the river conditions worldwide. Each picture is supplied with facts.

Structuring of Topics. This double page is about illgal immigrants in Greece. The article starts on the left with the extremely cut lead photo. The block of photos on the right describes three more cases. This example shows how topics can be divided into smaller units and be presented in a reader-friendly manner.
