Europe's best designed newspaper in the category 'weekly paper'. "Athens Plus" see to it that their readers are kept informed about how to spend  their leisure time throughout the week.

Jury-Statement:
"Athens Plus"  is the medium for extra information for the week to come. Extensively researched rubrics like '20 events in 7 days' or a page dealing with event tips for the entire family, 'Family Fun', form the basic material of this service-oriented newspaper. Reports, interviews and facts provide the readers with further 'news to use' for the week ahead spent in Athens or anywhere else in Greece. "Athens Plus": a service package orientated towards the needs and interests of their readers.

Masthead Colours. The first word is printed in black, the second in blue - a contrast which highlights the word 'Plus'.

Teasers under the Masthead. All three of them are accompanied by a visual; only the one on the far right is a cut-out photo.

Solo Picture. The eye catcher on this page is the large photograph in the middle with a caption headed by the words 'Dive in'. Most front pages show a similar layout creating a leisure-time atmosphere.

Lead Story. The biggest headline appears on the upper part of the front page together with a reference to an inside article.

Page Layout. The front page of this newspaper in a tabloid format shows a great number of small units, which offers variety and dynamics. The readers cannot but dip into the pool of  information about how to organise their free time in the week to follow.

Pictures. The dominating picture in the middle of the page helps to structure the amount of information offered to the readers. Thus, the page layout is both clear and varied.

Photographic Cut. The photo on the left taking the whole length of the page exhibits a radical cut in order to highten the dynamics of the page. The article is supplemented by a service-box in the middle.

Dynamic Page Layout. Typical of this newspaper is a certain amount of articles per page. The cut-out photo adds to the general relaxed appearance. The article next to it is still wide enough to make for good readability.

Service for Everybody. Page three is devoted to the announcement of events: '20 events in 7 days' reads the heading.They are divided into the rubrics visual arts, exhibitions, theatre, music, cinema, beach parties, festivals and 'out of town'. Clarity is provided by rubric headings and vertical lines.

Service for Children. Another service page is addressed to parents with rubrics like books, movies,  DVD classics, animated films, water parks and parks & playgrounds in  Athens.
"Athens Plus"  - as can be seen from these pages - is a very service-oriented paper focusing on the readers' leisure-time actvities.

Business. This is one of the business pages with the updated stock market listings on the top. The different countries are identified by their national flags which serve as a background.

Double Page. The major topic on this double page is the full moon. The lead photo shows the full moon shedding its light onto a temple of the ancient world. The article deals with 'Nocturnal celebrations at ancient sites on August 16', the night of the full moon. In a two-column service-box on the right page events outside  Athens are indicated.

Information on the newspaper.
"Athens Plus" made its debut on June 13, 2008 as an English-speaking weekly in Athens. It is issued in a tabloid format (half Nordic format) and sells 2,000 copies. As a supplement it is distributed together with the "International Herald Tribune", which is published together with the Greek daily newspaper "Kathimerini".
"Athens Plus" employs 15 journalists, one photographer and two layouters. PDFs of the printed medium are posted on their home page athensplus.gr
