Concepts.

Concepts should be continuously improved to keep the readers' interest and keep up with the latest developments on the newspaper market.

Concepts
The traditional concept of Europe's newspapers, which evolved in the 19th century, is still widely accepted. It comprises the classical sections: home affairs, foreign affairs, business, culture, sports, miscellany, local news etc. The category 'concept' at the competition, however, has shown that editorial staffs aim at improving both contents and concepts to keep up with present-day demands.

Business Idea. The alternative newspaper "Amsterdam Weekly", in an effort to keep their editorial freedom, developed the idea to sell their readers editorial space. To realise this idea each page was divided into 204 blocks for € 5 each. The result is presented on one of the front pages: The white space signals that not all fields could be sold. Also on some inside pages white fields mark the gaps that could not be filled by the readers' contributions. On the whole, an innovative idea to draw public attention to cash-flow problems.

Menden Is Us. To show the readers their quality the editorial staff of the newspaper "Westfalenpost" produced a series of 13 eight-page sections on the city of Menden. They also had in mind, of course, to attract more subscribers. On one page an aerial view of a street and portraits of the people living there can be seen.

Another page presents a class of school kids together with an interview with a hip-hopper.

Sampler Pages. This is the name of a page with "Sonntag Aktuell" where different authors can voice their opinions on a single topic. The topic on this page is 'Mother's Day'.
