Masthead. The font has been kept but with a shaded edge to the left so that it gets a noble, classical appeal. The white space on the left and right points out its upmarket quality. Lead Picture. Almost always a photo is used together with a headline and a subhead. For a bigger choice of visuals also cut-out photos can be used, placed on a coloured background, as can be seen in the motif on the topic 'Lance Armstrong'. The colour both highlights the photo and the print. Typography. The Chronicle, a font devised in the USA with fine serifs, is used for headlines. It supports the overall classical appeal of this newspaper. Subhead and Lead. Since the traditional combination of headline, subhead and lead often made it difficult to avoid verbal repetitions, subhead and lead have been reor ganized into one unit. Five Columns. The rather wide columns create a relaxed effect on the overall layout and make for good readability. They also allow half-column-wide breakers. |
